Imagine if your site has a lot of traffic or worse, people click off without ever seeing your site because they are impatient to wait for the page to load. Some people start with free hosting such as Blogger and later migrate to their own host when they realize that they are getting a sizeable audience. Not that you can't do that, but there are disadvantages to it. For example, your site ranking may be affected and then it will take time to achieve its usual position. You run the risk of losing some of your regular visitors. All this can translate to a drop in earnings.
